Looks exactly like a stretch of downtown Pewaukee, Wisconsin in the late 50's! I remember standing at the corner gas station there waiting for the annual ping pong "Whirly-bird-style" helicopter drop with prizes from downtown merchants printed on some of the ping pong balls.

I don't think we're likely to see a wildly exuberant economy again... Things will be worth what they're worth -- like the times in this picture.

That would be okay with me. I (think) I don't really need that much to have joy. Sometimes, having less it's easier to have joy. What do you think? We're not talking austere, hard times, now... :) "Things being what they're worth" - I like that. Thanks!

Yes it does look a bit like old downtown Glenview. Nice.
I am seeing people getting back to roots. First saw it in music but now lifestyle - cooking, gardening, home made items. Buying less, making and reusing more, buying locally, etc.

I am doing it to and really enjoying it. Sure it saves money and helps eliminate garbage, but it is also fun to think of ways to reuse an interesting bottle or make my own salves and balms. Sewing and carpentry are talents I do not have but it would be fun to make your own clothes and furniture.
The younger generation is in to much of that plus...See More

A gardener telling me about 'getting back to the roots.' That's Punny. Gwynna and I were just driving around and it occurred to us that with the death of all the chains that sell digital products and commercial space, we might see a new kind of art galleries. Stuff made by the folks for affordable prices. It seems that since a lot of what used to line our shelves and take up wall and floor space is now nearly 'spaceless' we might want to put more unique objects around our houses.

And I had this weird thought that somebody with photoshop and modest skills could put together a historic 'Glenview' painting like that. Rugens. Glenview House. Hackneys. Water Tower. Klippers. montaged together in a way they never really were. I'd buy it as screen art, wall picture, something. If 200,000 people have lived and grown up in Glenview, probably 1 in a 100 would buy one. That's a great 2nd Income Piece.

Haha. Ouch. As we used to say, two-thirds of a pun - PU!
Then again, maybe I can come up with a new business using that theme!

More antique stores and resale shops perhaps? Cheap clothes and household items are big now but collectibles have gone down in demand. That could go up with more income since it is very popular around here to have ...See More

Also I can see boutiques of recylced clothing and accessories. I have seen pictures of old t-shirts turned into wearable art. My niece made me tote bags out of old t-shirts from a thrift shop and she buys clothes she can cut up and use in items she knits (She actually spins her own wool. Lucky she's in Iowa). One of my faves I have seen is the woven juicebox purse - recycled, functional, cute, and nostalgic.

@Flint re pub. trans. -- Korean city buses are >nice< ! Comfortable individual cushy bucket seats w/arm rests, individual air/light outlets for each passenger, even curtains! Of course, these can be maintained inexpensively 'cuz Koreans are much more civic minded & clean up after themselves. Still, one wonders if someone opened a reliable "luxury" public transit where extra $ is spent o keeping the vehicles clean & well policed whether it would work in US.

That sounds great. I think it would be great. We could be watching movies instead of bumpers. $$$ and corporate sponsorship. Imagine if Starbucks sponsored busses and used their stores as stations.

Un-metered parking is interesting to note. I don't see a ticket-giver. Its interesting to note that when L.A. really wants a job done, like handing out tickets, they hire private contractors. We should force them to use public employees.

No stoplight cameras. Cool cars. Nothing pius if you know what I mean.... Motorcyclist doesn't appear to have a helmet. Billboard does not carry a scary health message about Swine Flu. Working mechanic area, because it was still possible for real people to work on cars. No big sign advertising the price of gas because everybody knows its 25 cents a gallon.

The sad thing is that we've been so brainwashed into noticing these things. What a huge step backward we've taken. I was watching 48 Hours. Great film. You couldn't make that movie today. Still the best work Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte ever did.

Transmedia Needs a New Name

Flint Dille Transmedia Panel was fascinating. Great people on it. Something is about to pop, and I'd love to be there when it happens. Has anybody had any great experiences in new types of entertainment (not a good new movie, I mean doing something you've never done before) in the last couple years?

Writing and designing 3 ARGs. We used geocaching in the last two. Since they occur in real time in the real world anything can happen, so you're constantly creating and recreating to stay one step ahead of the players. Challenging, scary and soooo much fun!

Wow... Love to talk to you about the ARG's some time. That's an area I find extremely interesting these days. For everybody else, an ARG is an Alternate Reality Game. In my mind, its a game you play in the real world often enhanced by a smart phone.

I always thought Transmedia was kind of an annoyingly exclusive term. I can remember the day I first heard it, six years ago. I was like, huh? Whats the latest definition?
Flint Dille
Flint Dille
Yeah. I don't particularly like the term. Its kind of like information superhighway... Way too complex for the definition. Actually, that's kind of a fun word topic. Why do some terms survive and others don't?

If, by Transmedia, we're trying to say something that is books, movies, games, TV, social interactive fiction, ARG... What is a word for that? Ubiquimedia?

I thought of it as new media than transcends old paradigm stuff... in all mediums... The I pod transforms Old media radio disc players I pad with women's sanitary napkins--- that sort of thang...

It seems that it must be, in some ways, interactive... It must grow... At best, it allows consumer participation (fan fic, etc.).

Let's find the right word. You can be passive and just watch the movies, read the books. You can be active. You can be FANatical or casual. Does the word have something to do with pliability, navagability... It would be very kool if we could crack this.

I agree, I don't like "transmedia" as a word much, but it's the current buzzword, so I use it. I don't have any brilliant ideas to replace it, though.

Cross-platform, cross-media, panmedia aren't much better. ;P

Immersive, invasive, Ubiquitous, media-fungible, ambient -- all wrong, but might lead to something better. Or, what's a word we can make up that doesn't have any relation to this.

There's also something I just thought of that I've never heard anybody really talk about. Franchises can become Trans-sensory. James Bond tastes like martinis, Travis McGee tasted like steaks. Raymond Chandler 'feels' like the Santana Winds (I'm done with Santa Anna)... Santana just looks better and some of Carlos Santana's music feels like the Santana winds, anyways. Sometimes in W
