I'm arguing that first and best was 'Hey Jude', but let's move this conversation to the true '80's ArenaRock Power Ballad.

I'll put 'I wanna go where love is' -- Foreigner. (Might not be the right name.). But that's not my favorite. I'm holding back. Really embarrassed.

Oh please, the MASTER of the power ballad is Meat Loaf. "Bat Out of Hell," "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth," "Two Out Of Three Aint Bad," and all-too neglected "For Crying Out Loud."

Aerosmith's "Dream On" would be it for me, I suppose - since it was the title song to my H.S. Prom. But, if I personally had to choose...it would be either "Magic Man" or "Barracuda" by Heart. I love fellow hardcore rock n' roll chicks !

Sorry... the 1980s... It's a split between "I Wanna Know What Love Is" by Foreigner and "How Soon is Now?" by The Smiths

"I'll Remember You" by Skid Row is one that immediately comes to mind... "Fly to the Angels" by Slaughter...my personal favorite is probably "Home Sweet Home" by Motley Crue.
"How Soon Is Now" would be more alternative rock/wave, I daresay, as would "Kyrie". And sorry guys, anything from the Transformers: the Movie soundtrack would classify as glam metal. No power ballads there.

Sister Christian. Especially if you're throwing small firecrackers inside while blasting the song. (that's a Boogie Nights reference that may have gotten away from me...)

Stairway to Heaven is too much of an art song to be a power ballad. Of that era, 'Beth' by Kiss might be one. Well, that's later.

Steven, I'm going with you that maybe Epitaph is kind of a proto ballad, but I put early Crimson on a very high pedestal. Power Ballads are kind of metal muzak. Lizard... Wake of Poseidon... That's art.
